I’m Billy the dog. I work for the Dementia Dog project alongside a professional handler. I help people with dementia, mental illness or learning difficulties to enjoy a full and active life in the community.
Why am I here?
In 2015, one of Legrand’s Business Development Managers, Billy Graham and his wife Lisa were tragically killed in a terrorist atrocity on a beach in Tunisia. Billy had personal experience of the great work that Alzheimer’s Scotland did for those suffering with dementia including supporting his mother who also suffered from the disease before she died.
All those who worked with Billy felt that they wanted to do something to remember Billy by and whilst talking with Alzheimer’s Scotland, heard about a fantastic initiative called the Dementia Dog project where dogs can make a real difference to people in the community.
The decision was taken to raise £15,000 to fully sponsor a dog in Billy’s name. Friends and colleagues took part in a number of events including the Edinburgh Marathon, a 200 mile bike ride from Billy's home town of Perth to the Legrand Factory in Blyth as well as a quiz night which took place at the company’s annual sales meeting. In December 2016, the Dementia Dog project was presented with a cheque for £15,975 to enable them to train a new puppy for work as a community assistance dog.
So that’s me.... you can follow my journey as I continue my training right here on Independent For Longer! I hope you find it of interest and maybe we’ll get to meet at a community event near you soon.
